چکیده

The slow-coloring game is played by Lister and Painter on a graph G. On each round, Lister marks a nonempty subsetM of the uncolored vertices, scoring ∣M ∣ points. Painter then gives a color to a subset of M that is independent in G. The game ends when all vertices are colored. Painter and Lister want to minimize and maximize the total score, respectively. The best score that each player can guarantee is the sum-color cost of G, written s̊(G). The game is an online variant of online sum list coloring. We prove ∣V (G)∣ 2α(G) + 12 ≤ s̊(G) ∣V (G)∣ ≤max{ ∣V (H)∣ α(H) ∶H ⊂ G}, where α(G) is the independence number, and we study when equality holds in the bounds. We compute s̊(G) for graphs with α(G) = 2. Among n-vertex trees, we prove that s̊ is minimized by the star and maximized by the path. We also obtain good bounds on s̊(Kr,s).

Online Paintability: The Slow-Coloring Game

The slow-coloring game is played by Lister and Painter on a graph G. On each round, Lister marks a nonempty subsetM of the remaining vertices, scoring |M | points. Painter then deletes a subset of M that is independent in G. The game ends when all vertices are deleted. Painter’s goal is to minimize the total score; Lister seeks to maximize it. The score that each player can guarantee doing no w...

Mr. Paint and Mrs. Correct

We introduce a coloring game on graphs, in which each vertex v of a graph G owns a stack of lv−1 erasers. In each round of this game the first player Mr. Paint takes an unused color, and colors some of the uncolored vertices. He might color adjacent vertices with this color – something which is considered “incorrect”. However, Mrs. Correct is positioned next to him, and corrects his incorrect c...

Sum-Paintability of Generalized Theta-Graphs

In online list coloring (introduced by Zhu and by Schauz in 2009), on each round the set of vertices having a particular color in their lists is revealed, and the coloring algorithm chooses an independent subset of this set to receive that color. For a graph G and a function f : V (G) → N, the graph is f -paintable if there is an algorithm to produce a proper coloring when each vertex v is allo...

A Paintability Version of the Combinatorial Nullstellensatz, and List Colorings of k-partite k-uniform Hypergraphs

We study the list coloring number of k-uniform k-partite hypergraphs. Answering a question of Ramamurthi and West, we present a new upper bound which generalizes Alon and Tarsi’s bound for bipartite graphs, the case k = 2. Our results hold even for paintability (on-line list colorability). To prove this additional strengthening, we provide a new subject-specific version of the Combinatorial Nul...
